"Appealing design. From generation to generation."
Katriina Nuutinen (b. 1983) is one of the leading Finnish designers of her generation, specializing in glass and lightings. Since graduating from the School of Arts and Design at Aalto University in Helsinki in 2011 she has worked with materials such as mirror, wood, metal and cork work that has resulted in successful collaborations with producers such as Ligne Roset and Klong.
The delicate Hely jewel lamp is a perfect example of her know-how of various materials and her creative flair. Nuutinen’s harmonic work mainly consists of lights, interior accessories and tableware. Her designs reflect her fascination towards the field of work, the materials, the process of creating and those who create.
Nuutinen has won several international awards, among them the latest Talents a la Carte award by Maison&Objet fair 2016 and Interior Innovation Award 2015 Winner awarded to the Candeo bright light lamp produced by Finnish Innolux. In 2011 she was awarded the Finnish talent of the year in Muoto2011 gala in Helsinki. In 2014, her Oma floor lamp was selected for Home- ware Top 25 by Monocle magazine. In 2017 the Perho mirror was selected one of the twelve best products from Finland in 2017. More recently, she was awarded a three-year grant by the The Finnish Cultural Foundation.
Nuutinen’s inner calling, strong drive, and guidance make her creations come alive. She is fascinated by complex yet sophisticated technical details, daring combinations of materials, fiddling with fingers and finding harmonious mix of color tones and appealing shape compositions.
Essential to her working process is goal-driven toiling from detailed sketching and form shaping to relatively quick finalizing to ready product. Her main material glass has great qualities to reflect light and color, to cause optical illusions.
