The European Forest City award, 2023 for The European Forest Institute

Katriina had the honor of making the European Forest City of the Year award piece, which is awarded annually by the European Forest Institute (EFI). This year, Novi Sad in Serbia was awarded.

EFI hoped that the work would be made of oak, which is an important wood material for Serbia. An oak leaf can also be seen in EFI's own logo.

Katriina got the idea that the shape of the piece could be an acorn, which symbolizes the beginning of everything, including hope.

A possibility and a starting point for something new smolders in the seed. As if someone had heard her desire to do something meaningful with her creativity.

Let the award acorn remind its recipients of the importance and hope of nurturing forests from the day forward.

From 2014, the European Forest Institute has granted the title of ‘European Forest City’ to the city which hosts the EFI Annual Conference. The 2023 EFI Annual Conference was held in Novi Sad, Serbia in September 2023.

The European Forest Institute was established in 1993 in Joensuu, Finland with the aim of enhancing international forest research and providing decision makers with unbiased forest-related information at a pan-European level.

The European Forest Institute (EFI) is a pan-European international organization. They have 25 Member Countries, and 116 member organizations from 36 different countries working in diverse research fields.

"When the Candeo bright light lamp was designed, nothing like it had ever been seen on the market before. In the past, people had to sacrifice table space to accommodate large bright light devices.

Candeo is the first device of its kind that allows you to enjoy the benefits of bright light therapy without having to compromise on beauty as it fits in nicely with most types of decor."

Perho mirror with moving wing, 2017 for Swedish Klong Intermestic AB

Think touch of the wings of birds or sensitivity of flying butterfly. The fragility of these two creatures have inspired Katriina to compose these two part mirrors. The hinges between the mirror panels allow the smaller panel to be moved. It gives possibility to investigate and reflect the surroundings. You are not captured in one view only.

Perho mirror was selected to be one of the 12 best Finnish interior product of the year 2017.

What is a butterfly? A flower with wings, a thought fluttering free. Poem by: Kaisa Happonen

Hely jewel lighting, 2010 for Swedish Klong Intermestic AB

Katriina Nuutinen designed Hely in year 2009 and the first show for the design was in Stockholm Furniture Fair on February 2009. During the fair it was chosen to be the most beautiful product of the fair that year. The Hely caught the eye of Swedish producer Klong and it was launched as their product at the same fair year 2010.

Hely is a jewel of light. Formed by four colored glass balls with colors to enhance the harmony of the shapes. In Hely, the light bounces and replicates itself and the glass pieces. Creating a light full of atmosphere.

Produced in 200 pieces unique series.

Part of the collection of Finnish Glass Museum in Riihimäki.

Chosen as a Future Classics by Vitra Store Helsinki in 2015.

”Love at first sight!”

Eva Hjertberg, CEO Klong, Hely producer

Said about Hely jewel lamp:

”The most beautiful lamp I have ever seen!”

Linnea Salmen, Sylvie Agency

” I have a priviledge to see it right after awakening! An apple of my eye!”

Leena Harkimo

“What a genial lighting idea, a simple loop, like a bracelet round your wrist holding a set of gigantic mouth-blown glass bubbles, as if straight out of the classic Murano masterclass catalogue, but no, it comes from Finland, Hely, launched 2009 by Katriina Nuutinen. Still a chicken at the time, beginning her design journey and already straight into the The Finnish Glass Museum and many awards with it.

New, fresh, rawishingly beautiful and what a great idea! I can so well remember when I saw the light the first time, my heart almost stopped, I thought it was so beautiful. So yes, this must be an all time favorite in my Top Ten Future Classics of new design from the Nordic market, stylish, simple, innovative, just the way we like it. I encountered during my Skandium time.

This is a masterpiece!

When it came out, I presumed the designer to gave 150 years experience, why? Because it is so simple, well proportioned an thought through. It will never go out of style.”

Christina Schmidt, founder of Skandium, CEO Christinas Interiors

Candeo Air bright light pendant lamp, 2013 for Finnish Innolux

Katriina Nuutinen conceived the idea behind Candeo for a Master of Art diploma project. Her goal was to design an aesthetic pendant bright light that would be suitable in many spaces, and which might easily be adjusted into mood lighting.

With the toggle switch on top of the Innolux Candeo lamp, it is transformed from a bright light into a design lamp providing a warm light with atmosphere. At its full power Candeo is both a bright light device and an efficient general and reading light.

A height adjustment on the black textile electric cord adds versatility to the Candeo lamps usage. The innovative Candeo is the first pendant bright light device on the market.

The uniqueness of Candeo is emphasised by the fact that the colour temperature is easy to change from warm white to pure white.

Fennia Prize 14 honorable mention, 2014

The lamp of the year 2013, Divaani magazine

“Katriina has been an active and determined, but flexible designer and developer. She listens well to the client. Candeo was a really precisely dimensioned product and she was able to take into account many of the goals set for the product.

When Katriina proposed a bright light hanging from the ceiling to us for product development, our need and her proposal hit the spot.

Overall, the project went really well.”

Jukka Jokiniemi, CEO Innolux, Finland

“We worked together when Innolux Candeo - the pendant bright light with a Fennia Prize honorary mention - was developed. Katriina is a visionary, persistent and talented designer with an extremely sophisticated sense of form and colour.

She has a disciplined and practical yet ambitious approach to design and design related projects.

It has truly been a pleasure to work with her since she keeps up a constructive dialogue but does not hesitate in gently challenging others which leads into fruitful cooperation and top-notch end-results.”
